After all the tortures standard XII provided me i finally decided to choose college over course and ended up at NIT Jaipur.Once again i was just curious to know what happened inside an NIT.So finally along with my dad i started the 44hour journey in Marusagar Express. From the green Kerala through a dull Karnataka to a cool Goa & a not so bad as expected MadhyaPradesh the train journey was pretty much boring but for nature. And finally the train entered Rajasthan & as expected those long barren lands with a camel or two with an ugly 100 year old bus in a so called road. That pretty much convinced me to return back after visiting the college & a couple of tourist spots, though that was not to be.Jaipur city is a lot different from the picture i depicted in my mind.It is not that bad or small a city nor is it that extravagant happening place(before the bomb blasts),somewhere in between with some posh residential & commercial areas and some others, which with a little bit of exaggeration would qualify for a town.More importantly i knew i could survive here(my poor hindi not withstanding).
As i said language has been a big problem. Why should i learn hindi was a something i couldn't get convinced when in school. But as the saying goes Necessity is the father of invention & i had no other option.Hindi classes were indirectly taken by my chom friends & as it often is gaalis constituted lions share of my early vocabulary. The formal daily package i needed to survive was mastered easily though i would still struggle to engage in those long conversations, partly because my chom friends lacked an inspiring student. The gaali classes continued though, thanks to the speeding lorry drivers who found me inspiring enough to impart their hard gained knowledge while i was still learning to ride a bike.May be because it's closer to Delhi the rules are quite strict here.I was fined twice while riding a bike without a license(i can tell you the number of times i got away in Kochi) & also at the railway station for not having a platform ticket(again i can tell you about the number of times i had a platform ticket & the mufti police not caring to check however hard i tried to act circumspect). In the latter case i was caught along with 2 of my friends & were fined Rs 810(courtesy the last train which arrived from Mumbai) & we had Rs 300 in our pockets. The police agreed to accept our plight,condition-He wouldn't issue the receipt which cost 500 bucks.
That was the 1st time i paid a bribe.Talking about bribes that's an integral part of a smooth life here.If you remain that truthful person with hardcore integrity & principles your problems will be solved by the time your grandson is in the coffin. For once i was surprised (now i am used to) the discrimination based on caste and community even in college.Unless this poison is eliminated i don't foresee APJ"s vision 2020 getting fulfilled.Personally i feel traditions should be maintained at the historical palaces here & not the old caste-community issues.
Jaipur is better known for it's tourist destinations constituted by the historical palaces which attracts thousands of foreign tourists every day not to forget we Indians who make it a point to visit this place at least once in your life.Paradoxically i don't fall in that category because i find all these forts similar. The sun which accompanies you throughout is frustrating to say the least.I have often wished the govt would make all these tourist spots fully air conditioned?@#$%
Well malls are one place that can give you some respite in the scorching heat. How many times we friends visit malls without a penny in our wallets(window shopping @ Raymonds,Adidas,Reebok,Woodlands) has raised quite a few eyebrows? To be honest that doesn't embarrass us.I have seen a man at a mall in Delhi buying a Tag Heuer watch worth 2 lakhs & then succumbing to the pressure of his 3 feet something tall son & bought him one worth 60 000.That gave me the king of all inferiority complex e's & i am sure nothing else would ever match.
For all the bhasha dikhat's,bribes,caste-community issues, boring tourist spots, horrible climate & the constantly embarrassment generating malls i have enough reasons to hate Pink City. But for some enigmatic reasons I Still Love You Jaipur.
Welcome

m from jaipur and hadnt realized how beautiful the city is till i didnt visit it again after staying in delhi for a year.
i know it aint an extravagant city ... nor it is an underdeveloped one... its just there... its growing, the people still wont think to go for coffee to barista...but its lovely.
nice post here. if theres any way i can help u with jaipur u're most welcome!
Just a suggestion : either write short crisp posts or make teh long ones interesting enough. I have written so many long posts that go on and on but ppl still read coz they r interesting...so try to do that. All the best!!

Hey..
gud one yaar.. It happens.. I too don't know why.. But I have been in a place for 4 years during my graduation and still I think of the life I lived there.. I think this happens because we have spent the four years of life which is a point when we turn from unmatured state to a matured state...
you are an amazing teller! great going! consider writing stories!
dude must say... very well narated... though i completely could relate to your condition when u were at the train station where u paid ur first bribe, even though mine( first bribe) was to avoide a car CHALLAN but the next experience was at the station...
and that has since carried on, as i dunno why but i have this very ugly relation with the railways and i always end up getting fined for something or the other... lol..
ne ways cheers... tc, n keep up da gud work!
"The gaali classes continued though, thanks to the speeding lorry drivers who found me inspiring enough to impart their hard gained knowledge while i was still learning to ride a bike."
Bu hu ha ha ha...
I was skeptical on reading your post initially as it seemed to be too lengthy. But then, as I started I just kept reading. I guess that's one of the best things a writer can do - keep the attention/interest within the reader till the end.
Keep them coming, Alex. :)
i love jaipur!!
i loved ur style of writing..the gaalis part..and the bribe one :D lol really nice style...

Many people have mention the length of the post, sure does, you've mentioned lots of varied things in this one post. My comment was due to you for like 3 days, and believe me your blog is opened at my browser, I'd been peeking and reading a bit and then moving to something else in last three days!
everything is right in place then why was i not compelled to read even when i was in the right frame of mind.
You can write well, you have a grip on language! try writing precise and concise, I hope it is not offensive, I didnt mean to hurt you or something... write! because you can :)
asbah

Alex check the photobucket problem.
To get rid from this problem, you can change the whole template. Otherwise find the background img code with a photobucket URL and Remove this, at your template.
I just happened to see ur blog.Me too a mallu but unlike u i got married and came over jaipur.n its been 4 yrs.n i still hate it to the core.
Ah!nice post...feels gud aftr reading it:)
btw..when did necessity switch genders?:P
lol...even we got into the jaipur railway stn, chumma for 'site-seeing', without a platform ticket...but after a while, they started checking for tickets at the entrance/exit...got stuk there, until the guards looked the other way when we quietly slipped out;)
honestly i dint change her gender intentionally,u can blame it on my knowledge or rather lack of theroff......n u got in2 d railway station 4 site cing???...hop ya got ya tummy filled....thnx once again

ps u disappointed me :x i saw the label of 'love' and thought some ladki wadki ka chakkar and some nice romantic post must be there :( but sadly i was mistaken.. :(
"long" always signifies something which is boring. There is no hiding that fact.It usually happens wen I take my textbooks n den continuously count d no: f pages left 2 study.Bt neways I am grateful 4 yo compliment which came along
PS:Durin dis period I got a request frm a grp f school students who happened to comment on 1 f ma posts to post sumthin on ma love life n I just wanted to pull their legs through confusing titles.I shall share ma real love story one day
